Climate Health Stewards Launch

12/1/2023

Picture
Our Board Chair Lori and some of our founding stewards discuss climate action in Missoula.
On November 5th, we launched our Climate Health Stewards group! This new program brings together health professionals from across the state to act in measurable ways for a healthier climate. Major thanks to our founding stewards for getting us off to a great start with your passion and ideas. We are looking for passionate health professionals to join them and become climate health stewards!
Anyone can be a Climate Health Steward; all you need to do is plan an action in your community. This can be anything from reducing your clinic's waste stream to writing a letter to the editor of your local paper.
Your stewardship can be ongoing (like frequent conversations with patients about how climate affects their health) or a one-time impact (like attending a climate-related CME course or webinar). Each steward is planning an action in one of three different categories: reducing healthcare's carbon footprint, supporting MT climate health, or amplifying MT healthcare voices for climate. This follows the commonly used framework of mitigation/adaptation/advocacy for climate health.
Being a steward means you're not in this alone! We have quarterly meetings to inspire and encourage each other as we share our successes and ask for advice. If you'd like more examples of possible actions, or if you have an idea and are ready to be a Climate Health Steward, please sign up here! Thanks to Good Works Ventures for the use of their beautiful space in downtown Missoula for our launch event.

MTHPHC is grateful for the continued leadership of the foremost authorities on climate health in this place: the Selish, Ql̓ispe,& Ksanka, Niitsitapi (Pikuni), Annishinabe (Ne-i-yah-wahk), A’aninin, Nokado & Nakona, Lakota & Dakota, Tsetshessthase & So'taa'eo'o, Apsáalooke, and Annishinabe/Metis (Little Shell Band) nations. We endeavor to follow their examples, remembering those who have passed before us, and caring for future generations.
