Be a leader - be a climate health steward!

Welcome to the Montana Climate Health Stewards program!
We’re looking to recruit 406 stewards in the next year who are willing to commit to taking steps to protect and enhance the health of Montanans in the face of climate change. As we all know, this is an “all hands on deck” moment, and we want to leverage the enthusiasm and passion of our community to protect Montana's climate and health!
We've listed examples of stewardship actions below. The things you can achieve as a Montana Climate Health Steward are restricted only by the time you have available, the depths of your ambitiousness, and the limits of your creativity!  If you’d like to become a Montana Climate Health Steward, please sign up below. information with us so we can publicize or showcase it on the MTHPHC website and in our newsletter. And if you’d like help or ideas from a MTHPHC Board member, please let us know.

    EXAMPLES OF ACTION
    Reducing healthcare's carbon footprint:
    • Taking actions to improve the sustainability of your practice environment (e.g., form a “Green Team” in your clinic, sign up for “My Green Doctor,” look at the Practice Greenhealth website, reduce your clinic’s waste stream)
    • Encouraging your hospital administrators to sign the HHS Pledge to cut greenhouse gas emissions by 50% by 2030 and achieve net zero emissions by 2050
    • Walking, riding your bike, or taking public transportation to work, and discussing the health co-benefits with your patients
    Supporting Montana's climate health:
    • Recruiting a local school or clinic to participate in the EPA Air Quality Flag Program
    • Adding climate and health-related questions to your intake paperwork or EMR templates 
    •  Talking to your patients regularly about how climate change could impact their health or mental health, and what they can do to protect themselves or take action
    • Becoming involved in local efforts to reduce the health impacts of heatwaves and wildfire smoke (e.g., distributing HEPA air filters, designing cooling shelters, checking AirNow.gov, etc.) 
    • Collaborating with colleagues to provide a climate and health-related workshop for your patients, neighborhood council, or the local community 
    • Training to become a Red Cross volunteer to provide medical or disaster mental health services in the event of a climate-related emergency 
    Elevating the health care voice in Montana:
    • Browsing our website
    • Following us on Social Media (X, Instagram, and Facebook
    • Registering for and attending the MtHPHC conference on 4/13/24 in Billings
    • Registering for and attending any of the 23-24 webinar series on MT’s Vulnerable Communities and climate change
    • Attending another climate-related CME or continuing education session – we have a 10 hour, free, virtual, self-based course on climate and human health in MT 
    • Bringing a health professional into your classroom or organization to talk about climate and health
    • Hosting a showing of the documentary shorts about climate and health in MT 
    • Encouraging at least one other health or mental health professionals to sign up for, or donate to, MtHPHC 
    • Asking your hospital or clinic about hosting MtHPHC’s floor banners for a month
    • Writing a letter to the editor or an Op-Ed about climate and health for your local newspaper
    • Teaching about climate change and health in a class or course
    • Testifying in front of the legislature about climate and health
    • Signing a climate and health-related petition (in our e-newsletters)
    • Helping your clinic or local health department to add climate and health-related information to its website
    • Asking your MT medical society to have a lecture on climate and health at your annual meeting
    • Providing information to your professional colleagues about climate and health (e.g., by hosting a climate-related continuing education session or grand rounds presentation)
