For the first time, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) has proposed collecting, monitoring, assessing, and addressing hospital emissions. It’s a pivotal move towards regulating greenhouse gas production in healthcare, an industry responsible for approximately 8.5% of US emissions.
The TEAM Decarbonization and Resilience Initiative is a voluntary program recently announced by the CMS Innovation Center (CMMI) as part of the proposed Transforming Episode Accountability Model (TEAM).
The Initiative has two elements:

- Voluntary reporting on metrics in four priority areas (organizational, building energy, anesthetic gas and transportation)
- Technical assistance with reducing emissions. In addition, hospital participants may receive CMS recognition.
