Student Corner Update
Chelsea Kuiper (PhD student in Public Health at the University of Montana) December - January 2023
Recently, the student chapter of Montana Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate had our first club meeFng of the semester. As a club, we host at least one campus-based or local event per academic semester to inspire students and community members in Missoula to reduce human causes of climate change. In past semesters we have volunteered at Soil Cycle and Free Cycles, two Missoula-based organizaFons dedicated to lowering the environmental impacts of human acFviFes on the planet. We also organized a bike ride in Missoula to increase community-level educaFon about the climate impacts of the healthcare sector. A guiding theme of our club events is engaging in climate acFons that give us hope for our collecFve climate future. With this idea in mind, we plan to host a documentary film screening this semester that shares creaFve, innovaFve soluFons people are developing and implemenFng across the globe to reduce our emissions. Following the documentary screening, we will facilitate breakout conversaFons among students to discuss current opportuniFes to build upon community and campus-level assets to adapt to climate change.
