Katie Smith and Acacia Maccullum, Pharm.D. candidates at Skaggs School of Pharmacy in Missoula, participated in a 6-week population health-focused rotation for their last year of pharmacy school. and Hayley Blackburn, Pharm.D. The project was partnered with Montana Health Professionals for a Healthy Climate. they created a project aimed to improve pharmacists' engagement in climate change (focus on extreme heat and wildfire smoke exposure) by providing education in community pharmacies with the goal of improving patient education. Secondly, the project worked to improve health education and outreach through educational materials such as flyers, handouts, and presentations. Lastly, the project is improving access to air filters by distributing air filters to community partners and monitoring patients that utilize the service. Additional partners include the University of Montana Skaggs School of Pharmacy (students and faculty), the Missoula County Climate Action Program, Missoula County Health Department, Climate Smart Missoula, Partners in Home Care, Missoula Pharmacy, and IPHARM (improving health among rural Montanans). They plan to analyze the data collected from community pharmacies and present preliminary results in December at the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP) midyear conference.
After dropping off two WINIX air filters, a local the staff pharmacist was ecstatic to have them and stated that she would have no problem finding someone interested in our program. She also told us that another pharmacist was curious about what program she was starting and how they could get involved. The community seems excited to have resources about wildfires and extreme heat, as well as the tools to equip their patients with cleaner air.
Smokey-The-Bear-Loving Katie hails from a Havre MT horse ranch and Acacia, from Oregon where her parents had a nursery. They both plan to work in community pharmacies.
“Thanks to all who support our mission and we can't wait to continue working with all of you.”
