Melody is from Missoula, Montana, where she is pursuing a dual undergraduate degree in Social Work and Environmental Science and Sustainability at the University of Montana. Passionate about addressing climate challenges, she recently completed a social work practicum with Climate Smart Missoula, becoming the first undergraduate in the School of Social Work to partner with a climate-focused organization. During her placement, she launched a climate emotions support group for peers and contributed to initiatives educating residents about climate impacts and solutions. In her free time, Melody enjoys skiing, playing music, and taking walks with her dogs.
Melody feels that, as a social worker considering the climate crisis, it is essential to recognize that there are numerous ways to apply her skills to support climate action. This may include supporting clients through their emotional responses or introducing the perspective that our changing climate influences how we address social justice issues. Her social work values ensure that she will work in service to those who are most vulnerable in our systems; this includes those most vulnerable to the effects of climate change. As the world changes, those who already face the brunt of challenges will be greatly affected by physical climate changes. By incorporating this perspective into her work, she can ensure clients are effectively advocated for as we navigate the systemic changes needed to sustain life on this planet.
